Hazel May Sies Bell, 84, of Westminster died Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Medical ICU in Baltimore following complications from a February injury. Born September 15, 1925 in Westminster she was the daughter of the late Howard I. and M. Pauline Simonson Sies. She graduated from Taneytown High School in 1942 where she was known as Daisy and participated in dramatics, played saxophone in the orchestra, and was a star player and guard on the varsity basketball team. As a teenager she taught Sunday school at Taneytown Reformed Church and enjoyed roller skating at Rainbow Roller Rink in Taneytown. She was a licensed cosmetologist, worked at Sharkey's Drive-in for many years and retired from Jos. A. Bank. She supported the war effort during WWII by working in the electronics division at Bendix. She enjoyed visiting with her grandsons, attending weekly Bible study, bird watching, doing crossword puzzles, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Survived by daughters and son-in-law Paula Bell of Beech Creek, Pa., Deborah and Ian Walton of College Park, sons and daughter-in-law Barry Bell of Westminster, Brian and Robin Bell of Silver Run, sisters and brother-in-laws JoAnn and David Bush of Morrison, Ill., Reba and Sheldon Sprecker of McMinnville, Or., Rachel and Clifford Leister of Westminster, brother Gary Sies of Frederick, 2 grandsons Thomas Bell of Silver Run and Jason Walton of College Park. Also survived by nieces, nephews and extended relatives.
She was predeceased by brothers John I. Sies and Dennis W. Sies and sister Janet L. Schmidt. The family will receive friends at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009 from 11:30 A.M. til the time of service at 1:30 P.M. with Rev. Richard Shamer officiating. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg.
