Dexter Edward Robinson, 86, of Westminster, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at Carroll Hospice Dove House. Born October 11, 1923 in Springfield, MA, he was the son of the late Charles Edward Robinson and Mildred White Robinson. Survived by his wife of 27 years Patricia Roop Robinson.
His childhood memories stem primarily from living on the "west side" of Pittsburgh, Pa. during the depression. For pleasure he read books from the library and a can of soup gained his entry into a movie theater. At the age of 12 he was gainfully employed at Phillips Drugstore beginning at 15 cents an hour and ending at 35 cents an hour in 1940. He joined the Army July 1, 1942 during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska until his discharge in 1945. He never overcame his fear of running out of supplies during snowy, cold winter months. This GI Bill afforded him the ability to obtain a BA and MA English from the University of Pittsburgh.
His love of books led to a career as a college textbook salesman with Prentice Hall, Buffalo, NY from 1950-1952 and McGraw hill, New York, NY from 1953-1962. While employed with McGraw Hill he was also sales manager of Blakiston Division Medical Books, wrote specs for Dew Line and Nuclear Energy Government Operation in Oak Ridge, TN, managed a Russian scientific translation operation at Wright Patterson AFC. He worked out of offices located in Washington, DC, Rome, Italy, Charlottesville, VA, and NYC. From 1963-1968 he was President of World Publishing Company, Cleveland, OH which was owned by Times Mirror Corporation. From 1968-1970 he was Vice-President of Isaac Auerbach, Philadelphia, PA.; Computer Specialists. From 1970-1972 he was President of a Subsidiary of continuing Systems Education for John Diebold of NYC. In 1972-1983 he re-located to Westminster, MD. While there he was employed as Executive Vice-President of Access Corporation, Cincinnati, OH. He retired in 1983.
Upon retirement and his second marriage he enjoyed planting trees and flowers on their 18 acre wood lot. He would spend hours making trails in the woods that would lead to yet another poplar tree. He was often found on the sidelines at a lacrosse game that both his sons and grandsons engaged in. the early morning was spent writing for several hours. Although never officially published he did complete several novels during his period.
Besides his wife he is survived by sons Garrick Edward Robinson of Miami, Fla. and Scott Earle Robinson of Westminster, grandchildren Grant Garrick, Gregory Fox, Owen Charles, and Jack Dexter Robinson, and stepson Stephen Paul Bubel.
He was predeceased by stepson Michael Eugene Bubel and his first wife Jeanne Alexander Robinson.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 7 P.M. at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster where a memorial service will be held at 7 with Carroll Hospice Chaplain Dave Bare officiating. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157 or Gamber Lacrosse Programs at www.gamberlax.org.
