Charles A. "Kirk" Kirkpatrick, 85, of Westminster, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at Seasons Hospice Northwest Hospital in Randallstown. Born May 9, 1924 in Ashburn, VA he was the son of the late Lewis A. and Blanche C. Kirkpatrick. He was the husband of Martha Stoker Kirkpatrick, his wife of 61 years.

He graduated high school from Hyattsville in 1942. He served in the Army Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII from 1943 until 1946. He was a member of the Maryland State Police Class of 1948 and St. John Catholic Church in Westminster. Most of his police career was spent on the Eastern Shore of Maryland during which time he had assignments in Centreville and Sudlersville. He was appointed assisted commander of the Easton Barrack, then commander of the Salisbury Barrack, and then Director of the Police Academy and Personnel Division in Pikesville. He retired from the MD State Police in 1975 as a Major and an assistant Chief of the Administrative Bureau.

During his state police career he was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, FBI National Academy Associates, Southern Police Institute Associates, and Harvard Associates in Police Science. He attended the FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute, the University of MD, George Washington University, and the University Of Louisville, KY.

After retiring from the state police, he became director of Loss Prevention for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. He was a Civil War enthusiast, member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Fort Collier Center, Winchester, VA.

Besides his wife he is survived by sons and daughter-in-laws Michael and Lisa Kirkpatrick of Halethorpe, MD, John Kirkpatrick of Arlington, VA, daughters and son-in-laws Marti and Bill Bremer of Hopewell Junction, NY, Carol and Gerry Watkins of Middletown, VA, grandchildren Matthew, Mark and Nicholas Bremer, Rachel and Paul Kirkpatrick, and Kelley Watkins, brothers William Kirkpatrick of San Antonio, TX, Gerald Kirkpatrick of Doylesburg, PA and sister Norma Scordellis of Fredericksburg, VA.

He was predeceased by brothers Vernon and Lewis Kirkpatrick.

The family will receive friends at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at noon at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster. Interment in Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military honors.
