Jane McCarty Shaffer, 84, of Westminster, died Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Transitions Health Care in Sykesville. Born March 7, 1926 in Mount Union, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Cloyde and Ella McCarty. She was the wife of 54 years to Clyde L. Shaffer whom she married June 11, 1955.
She spent her early life in Mt. Union graduating in 1944. Before her retirement, she was a school teacher in Mount Union for her first eight years of teaching and then moved to Baltimore County Schools teaching for 30 years, where the majority of the years she served teaching as a twelfth grade English teacher. She received her Bachelor Degree in Education from Juniata College in 1948 and her Masters in Equivalency in 1970 from Chambersburg College. She was an avid bridge player and cross-word puzzle solver. She was a member of the Dundalk United Methodist Church for over 30 years serving as Church organist for over 15 years. She was also a member of the Deer Park United Methodist Church in Westminster for 25 years.
Surviving in addition to her husband is daughter Gretchen Shaffer of Owings Mills and son and daughter-in-law Glenn and Peggy Shaffer of Dundalk. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister Marion McCarty and two brothers Dean and Gerald McCarty.
The family will receive friends at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 2205 Sykesville Rd., Westminster from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 with Rev. Basil Day officiating. Interment in Deer Park Cemetery.
